Father of Cosmetic Surgery in the Philippines

Dr. Burgos T. Sayoc, MD (1904-1993) was one of the most influential pioneers of cosmetic surgery in the Philippines. A physician specializing in Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat (EENT) surgery, he devoted much of his professional career to advancing aesthetic and reconstructive procedures at a time when cosmetic surgery was still in its infancy in the country. Through his vision, innovation, and dedication to surgical excellence, he laid the foundation upon which modern cosmetic surgery in the Philippines continues to flourish today.

Long before aesthetic surgery became a recognized subspecialty, Dr. Sayoc was already performing reconstructive and cosmetic procedures involving the eyelids and face. His pioneering work in blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) and oculoplastic surgery earned him recognition as the Father of Oculoplastic Surgery as well as the Father of Cosmetic Surgery in the Philippines. His publications on dermatochalasis and eyelid surgery during the 1960s represent some of the earliest Filipino scientific contributions to aesthetic surgery.

Recognizing the need for an organization dedicated to aesthetic surgery, Dr. Sayoc founded the Philippine Society for Plastic Aesthetic Surgery in 1972, an organization that would later become the Philippine Society for Cosmetic Surgery (PSCS). He served as its first President from 1972 to 1976, bringing together specialists from ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology, and general surgery who shared a common interest in cosmetic surgical practice. Under his leadership, the Society emphasized continuing medical education, scientific exchange, ethical practice, and the promotion of safe cosmetic surgery in the Philippines.

As the Society's founding president, Dr. Sayoc worked alongside other distinguished pioneers, including Dr. Liborio L. Mangubat, Dr. Cesar F. Villafuerte Sr., and Dr. Teodoro Luna, establishing a multidisciplinary approach that would characterize cosmetic surgery training in the country for decades. The organization eventually became affiliated with the Philippine Medical Association and evolved into one of Asia's longest-standing professional societies dedicated exclusively to cosmetic surgery.

Beyond his organizational leadership, Dr. Sayoc served as an officer in the Armed Forces of the Philippines Medical Corps, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He was also widely recognized for popularizing cosmetic procedures designed to enhance the appearance of the eyes, introducing surgical concepts that were considered innovative during his era.

Today, more than five decades after founding the PSCS, Dr. Burgos T. Sayoc's legacy continues through the generations of cosmetic surgeons trained under the Society he established. His commitment to education, scientific advancement, ethical surgical practice, and patient safety transformed cosmetic surgery from an emerging interest into a respected medical discipline in the Philippines.
